Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology ( CATT ) Laboratory is the industry leader for transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design. We provide cutting-edge analytics products and an integrated product suite of situational awareness tools for transportation practitioners. These products and services are rapidly changing the way governments operate and make decisions.

We receive hundreds of gigabytes of transportation data daily making our petabytes of archived data likely the largest collection of traffic data in the world. Our clients use our software to analyze that data to generate valuable insights. Our work saves taxpayer money, improves the environment, and saves lives!

Our office is in College Park near the University of Maryland, easily accessible by DC Metro, MARC train, bus, car, and bike. When you join our team, you will work with software engineering professionals and transportation experts to develop technical methodologies and approaches to transportation big data projects, perform data extraction, cleansing, and transformation, identify potential funding opportunities, lead composition of research reports and journal articles, and manage junior data scientists and student interns.

Essential duties and responsibilities include ability to independently:

  • Develop analytical and statistical techniques (e.g., hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, etc.)
  • Develop and implement technical methodologies for big data projects
  • Implement machine learning models to enhance CATT Lab's current suite of tools
  • Perform data extraction, cleansing, and transformation of large datasets for statistical analysis
  • Identify new datasets for integration with existing tools
  • Manage junior data scientists and student interns
  • Assist in developing UI/UX designs for analytical tools
  • Identify potential funding opportunities
  • Assist in writing proposals
  • Lead composition of research reports, journal articles, and other technical documents
  • Represent the Lab at professional conferences
  • Assist in recruitment of new employees
  • Accurately estimate effort for work tasks
  • Coordinate and collaborate with developers, project managers, and other technical staff Minimum Qualifications:
    Education:
    • M.S. Degree in Computer Science, Transportation Engineering, or related field

      Experience:
      • 5+ years of expertise with R, Python, SQL and MS Excel
      • 3+ years of experience in predictive modeling, especially with machine learning techniques
      • 1+ years of experience in managing data scientists and/or researchers Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
        • Extensive knowledge and experience with transportation engineering topics
        • Strong background in transportation data collection methods and technologies
        • Strong MS Office skills and ability to concisely communicate approach and results to technical and non-technical audiences (verbal/written) Preferences:
          Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
          • Familiarity with transportation reference manuals (e.g., HCM , MUTCD , AASHTO Green Book, and HSM )
          • Expertise in transportation system performance measures
