Job Description:
THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Journeyman
Propulsion Engineer to provide support to the U.S. Coast Guard
(USCG) Ship Design Team at the USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC.
The engineer will provide propulsion support services to the Ship
Design Team in support of the Waterways Commerce Cutter, Polar
Security Cutter and Offshore Patrol Cutter.The candidate's
responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) performing or
supporting the following actions:
- Perform design review-related tasking for all USCG Cutter
acquisition programs.
- Evaluate, document and make recommendations on the design and
operation of USCG vessels and small boats, in particular the ship
machinery and related propulsion systems and equipment
- Providing engineering support in the analysis of all propulsion
related technical issues and design challenges pertaining to assets
in the USCG fleet.
- Conducting reviews and providing comments on new Coast Guard
acquisition cutter and boat propulsion system designs.
- Track design reviews, approval status, planning and
implementation of changes.
- Communicating and participating in Integrated Product Teams
(IPTs) and working groups with other USCG and Navy entities.
- Supporting Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) with
shipyards.
- Providing technical position papers, draft analyses, designs,
specifications, drawings, draft presentations as requested by the
section head.
- Reviewing and analyzing technical reports from third party
design validation sources and make recommendations to the
Government.Citizenship Requirements:
- Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this
position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will
be confirmed via I-9 /E-Verify at the start of employment.Security
Clearance Requirements:
- Must either posses an active Secret security clearance, or be
able to qualify for a new Secret security clearance upon hire.
- Must maintain clearance for the duration of employment.Required
Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering
or Naval Architecture from an ABET accredited university or
college. In lieu of an acceptable Bachelor's degree, one of the
following substitutions may be considered:
- Highschool diploma /GED equivalent plus an additional six (6)
years of relevant work experience.
- Associate's degree plus an additional four (4) years of
relevant work experience.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of recent, relevant professional
experience involving the design, development, and evaluation of the
operation of marine vessels, shipboard propulsion machinery, and
related equipment including three of more of the following:
- Development of ship propulsion and control systems
specifications including but not limited to diesel-electric
propulsion systems, propellers, rudder, thrusters, and their
interface with dynamic positioning systems
- Development of marine auxiliary and piping systems, review and
analyzing preliminary and functional design documentation and
development of ship system specifications.
- Review and analysis of mechanical and electrical propulsion
systems, and auxiliary / piping systems for technical data
packages
- Conduct trade studies to determine suitable configuration for
propulsion motors, power converters, and thrusters.
- Documented knowledge of U.S. Regulatory Body standards and
ability to develop and prepare ship machinery documents for
compliance with ABS Rules.
- Experience with US Navy, US Coast Guard, or Military Sealift
Command marine engineering practices.
- Proficient with common productivity software including
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and
Outlook).
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.ADDITIONAL
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSAn ideal candidate will possess some or all
of the following additional qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience involving the development or review
of Major Ship System Specifications, CDRLs, SOWs, the development
and review of ship feasibility, concept, preliminary, contract, and
detail design of shipboard propulsion systems.
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering
Exam.
- Experience with engineering software such as AutoCAD and
Navisworks.
- Familiarity with the USCG Standard Workstation and associated
