caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information
needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. PCORI is

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Public and Patient
Engagement, the Program Officer is responsible for strategic
decision-making and high-level management and monitoring of program
activities, special projects, and funded projects that advance
the.
. The primary responsibilities include providing oversight of a
portfolio of research contracts, contributing to design and
implementation of new processes and initiatives and evaluating
program activities and award portfolio based on the strategic
direction of the program. Specifically, the incumbent will lead and
manage tasks and activities related to advancing the science of
engagement while ensuring efficient and effective operations.
Possible program areas include refinement of research funding
announcements and development and oversight of task orders to
create tools and guidance to support meaningful engagement in
research; identification of promising practices in engagement
within the PCORI research portfolio; and promoting and advancing
the science of engagement in PCORI research and publicly.
For the purposes of this job description, engagement is defined as
broad involvement of patients, family and caregivers, clinicians,
payers, employers, and other members of the public as members of
interdisciplinary research teams participating in the planning,
conduct, and dissemination of clinical research.
Duties and Responsibilities
Science of Engagement and Translation of Engagement Knowledge
Responsibilities:
- Supports Associate Director with the identification and
management of the design and
implementation of activities related to the development of special
projects and requests for proposals.
- Assists Associate Director with the coordination and oversight
of projects to support the Program (e.g., RFP development, proposal
review, award monitoring and oversight, program metrics and
tracking)
- Identifies and manages the design and implementation of
activities related to the development of program specific PCORI
funding announcements (e.g., convening workgroup and advisory panel
meetings, working with external organizations including government
organizations)
- Actively engages in PCORI's processes for reviewing and
awarding applications received through the PCORI funding
announcement process.
- Advises awardees on the execution of their contracts.
- Engages in active portfolio management by monitoring awardees'
attainment of contract milestones and overall study progress,
conducting site visits, and implementing learning networks or
conferences to facilitate shared learning opportunities for
relevant stakeholders.
- Evaluates the program's portfolio to ensure balance and to
identify the need for modification of strategic funding directions
and opportunities.
- Advises potential applicants regarding their applications and
the application process.
- Represents PCORI's engagement approach and real-time,
practice-based findings on how engagement impacts and influences
studies to internal stakeholders and the field at large.
- Supports the oversight of various activities to share
engagement knowledge including webinars, abstracts and
presentations for conferences, and manuscripts or gray literature
to share promising practices in engaged research to advance the
science of engagement in research.
- Supports the collection of promising engagement practices from
research portfolio and translates to tools, guidance, and
assistance to share with PCORI staff and the research community to
further the practice of patient and stakeholder engagement in
research.
Engagement Program Responsibilities:
- Assists Associate Director in identifying and implementing
strategic objectives and directions for program.
- Identifies and manages the development and implementation of
the program (e.g., RFP development, proposal review, award
monitoring and oversight, program metrics and tracking)
- Assists Associate Director in identifying and implementing
strategic practices to ensure meaningful engagement in PCORI funded
research.
- Collaborates with colleagues across the Institute in
implementing program activities.
- May manage the work of and provide training for staff and
consultants, as assigned by the Associate Director
- Performs other Engagement Team related tasks as
necessary.
- Manages accurate recording of information in databases.
Creates, updates, and revises as needed.
- Assists in establishing, monitoring, and reporting on Program
budget.
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Plans and delivers information presentations regarding Program
direction, funding, and the application process and award
results.
- Participates in conferences, seminars, and other professional
development activities to maintain and enhance patient-centered
outcomes research expertise.
- Leads, contributes to, and participates in internal groups and
teams and cross-cutting initiatives. Carries out other
responsibilities as assigned by PCORI management.
- Keeps Associate Director and Engagement team appraised of
developments and occurrences in the field likely to affect
Engagement program decision-making and/or strategies.
- Collaborates with PCORI colleagues to contribute to the
evaluation of meaningful engagement in the development of research
partnerships.
