Assistant Scientist - Plum Island, New York

This position requires daily on-site laboratory analysis at the DHS mobile decontamination laboratory on Plum Island, the primary laboratory for processing biological or chemical indicators to provide independent verification/validation of decontamination throughout the project. It requires the ability to support activities, perform sample environmental sample analysis, maintain the necessary equipment, and ensure a safe and secure work environment with strict adherence to contract security and quality assurance requirements. This position will generally spend the majority of their time performing laboratory sample analysis. This position requires both technical and good communication skills with assigned staff and with on-site government and other contractor personnel.

Knowledge of laboratory Quality Assurance and Biorisk Management standards and working with Select Agents.

Nature and Scope
This position will directly report to the on-site Capability Manager (Laboratory Manager), and operationally report to the Program Manager while assigned to the mobile laboratory. This position requires the ability to work with a team, often working directly with an interdisciplinary team from the government and contractor staff working on-site.
Essential Functions

  • Performs processing and analysis of environmental samples for the presence of potential biological threat agents. Assists with sample in-processing, DNA preparation, immunoassay and PCR analysis, data entry into laboratory information management system and sample management system, and general laboratory housekeeping duties.
  • Provides oversight of sample collection and tracking according to strict Quality Assurance practices.
  • The ability to execute activities, maintain the necessary laboratory equipment, and ensure a safe and secure work environment with strict adherence to quality requirements.
  • This position will generally spend the majority of their time performing laboratory sample processing and analysis.Success Factors

    • Proficient oral and written communication skills and ability to engage with staff at all levels across organizational lines
    • Demonstrates technical subject matter expertise relevant to the Capability team
    • PC skills including Microsoft Suite, Outlook, and the ability to learn new software systems
    • Experience and technical knowledge to support quality assurance activities including the development of SOPs, risk assessments, Corrective and Preventive Action Plans (CAPAs)Minimum Qualifications
      • B.S./B.A. in biology, microbiology, or related technical field plus a minimum of 3 years relevant experience
      • Experience with day-to-day work within a BSL-2 laboratory or mobile BSL-2 laboratory
      • PC skills including Microsoft Suite, Outlook, and the ability to learn new software systems.
      • Experience with PCR/RT-PCR and immunological methods.Physical Demands and Work Environment Requirements
        This position requires participation in an Occupational Health and Medical Surveillance program, and a Biological Personal Responsibility Program. This position will require the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE), to include respiratory protection. Excellent hand-eye coordination is a must.
