POSITION SUMMARY
The Publisher provides strategic direction and leadership for the
publishing program through a deep understanding of medical
publishing, the field of psychiatry, the APA and its members and
staff, and the publishing programs history, as well as a wide
network of contacts with leading psychiatrists in the field. The
Publisher oversees all operations of APA's publishing program,
including its flagship publications DSM-5, American Journal of
Psychiatry, and Psychiatric News, a strong list of books, and its
digital platform PsychiatryOnline.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Guide the overall direction of APAs publishing program and ensure
that it supports the APAs vision and meets industry standards for
excellence working with the CEO & Medical Director and association
leadership.
Serve as a member of the APA senior staff, with responsibility for
providing strategic direction for the Associations publishing
operations, including medical and scientific books, journals, and
digital products.
Work with the CEO & Medical Director, APA Board of Trustees, and
Editorial Advisory Boards to ensure that APA values and
organizational goals are met.
Provide guidance on the commercial aspects of publishing, including
acquisitions and development, production, profit/loss estimation,
pricing, global sales chains, and financial planning.
Identify and develop current and future opportunities to strengthen
the position of the Publishing division in the marketplace and lead
its development and expansion.
Provide leadership for the strategic planning and execution of new
digital and web- based products, including PsychiatryOnline, ebooks
and apps, LMS courses for members, and other e-resources.
Guide publishing into the most flexible and adaptive position and
respond to change.
Formulate and implement strategic and tactical planning for all
publishing divisions: Acquisitions, Editorial, and Production;
Sales and Marketing; Psychiatric News; Digital Publishing; and
Customer Service and Operations. Ensure growth and profitability
for existing and future product lines.
Develop and oversee the editorial plan for books, journals, news,
and digital publishing, including acquisitions strategy, market
assessment, and business plans.
Oversee the fiscal and operating performance of publishing
products, including an active backlist of over 500 books, 20-30 new
books each year, up to 6 journals, the association newspaper, and
the digital publishing platform.
Identify new publishing content areas, technologies, advertising
opportunities, partnerships, innovations, and opportunities to
promote the widest possible dissemination of psychiatric literature
and products to audiences around the world.
Develop strategies that leverage APAs broad print catalog and brand
to create winning
digital products and services.
Serve as Publisher for the American Psychiatric Association
Publishing imprint.
Provide oversight and input into acquisition and development of
20-30 titles each year.
Network with a wide variety of leaders in psychiatry, related
psychiatry associations, and with APA staff to develop a deep
knowledge of the field and to inform product development and
program management.
Oversee day-to-day publishing operations and manage approximately
60 publishing employees in collaboration with publishing division
heads.
Supervise the core management team for Publishing, which consists
of the publishing division heads and serves as the major discussion
and policy setting group for Publishing.
Identify and implement ways to improve organizational structure and
efficiency, support staff initiative, and promote professional
development.
Provide guidance and direction to the development and
implementation of strategies for issuing permissions and licenses
and protecting APA content, with special attention to DSM-5 and
American Journal of Psychiatry.
Serve as publishing liaison to APA staff, leadership, and
members.
Manage the financial performance of APA Publishing and monitor
global sales and distribution chains for books, journals, news,
advertising, and digital publishing.
Oversee the reporting of analytic and fiscal information to the CEO
and staff and APA oversight bodies as required. Oversee, prepare,
and submit the annual publishing budget.
Provide planning and leadership for the future direction of
publishing investments, as well as the allocation of resources,
particularly in electronic publishing.
Build and maintain a fiscally sound publishing operation to support
the mission of the APA.
Oversee publishing exhibits at the APA annual meeting, IPS meeting,
and other key meetings around the world.
Work with department and division heads throughout the APA to
ensure that APA Publishing is integrated into and coordinated with
the many programs of the APA.
Work with the CEO and Medical Director, CFO, Chief Membership
Officer, Legal Counsel, Director of Information Systems, Director
of Research, Chief Communication Officer, Director of Education,
and other chiefs and staff to maintain an integrated and
coordinated approach to APA publishing.
Offer publishing guidance and develop products that support the
mission of divisions throughout the APA.
Leverage and engage with a wide network of authors, reviewers, and
contacts to support the annual meeting scientific program, article
submissions in Psychiatric News, and other projects developed in
divisions throughout the APA.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree; Masters degree preferred.
10-15 years of related experience.
Experience in developing and monitoring departmental budgets.
Documented learning (certificate or better) and hands-on experience
in the economics of small press publishing.
Demonstrated ability to supervise a departmental staff.
Ability to analyze a variety of complex administrative and
organizational problems and make sound policy and procedural
recommendations.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Ability to interact effectively with association leadership,
members, staff, and staff of other organizations.
Demonstrate flexible thinking and use of innovative approaches to
solve business challenges
