About the Department:
The Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is one of six academic
units within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) which
comprises the departments of Social Work, Global and Community
Health, Health Administration and Policy, Rehabilitation Science
and the School of Nursing. The College is currently transitioning
to become a College of Public Health. George Mason University is an
R1-ranked research university and among the most diverse in the

The Department of Nutrition and Food Studies was founded in 2011
and there are currently seven full-time faculty members, with

performance nutrition, public health nutrition, maternal and child
health, to food systems. The Department offers an MS in Nutrition
and both undergraduate minors and graduate certifications in Food
Security and Nutrition. A dietetics concentration within the MS
degree recently became accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), which enables
credentialing of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN). The
first dietetics class matriculated in the Fall of 2022.
The Department is housed in the Peterson Family Health Sciences
Hall and includes faculty and staff offices, a state-of-the-art
Nutrition Teaching Kitchen and a Human Nutrition Assessment Lab. In

dietetics program. Courses will be in a variety of nutrition areas
including introductory nutrition, Pre-Dietetics, courses in the MS
program, as well as in the MS/RDN program. Responsibilities for the
MS/RDN program may include assisting with planning, coordinating,
facilitating, administering, and monitoring activities on behalf of
the program. These activities ensure the quality of the student
learning experience during their experiential learning. In
addition, the candidate would work closely with the Program
Director to develop and assess the experiential learning component
of the program, including conducting student site visits and
ensuring ACEND competencies are met. CHHS faculty can buy out
