The DC Community Organizer, hereinafter DC Community Organizer, will be responsible for helping PPMW execute the organizing program across PPMW's three jurisdictions - DC, Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, and Northern Virginia, with a particular focus in DC's Wards 7 and 8. In conjunction with serving as a Community Organizer for PPMW, a 501(c)(3) organization, the individual will also serve as a Community Organizer for PPMW's affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization, Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland, and NOVA (PPADMV), including at times supporting PPADMV's organizing program across the greater state of Maryland. This position will work in close coordination with Planned Parenthood's national organizing team, Planned Parenthood organizations in Maryland and Virginia, regional partners and coalitions, and other Planned Parenthood advocacy entities to build power for the reproductive health and rights movement. At no time will the Community Organizer engage in partisan political activity on behalf of PPMW, though at times the role will involve this type of activity on behalf of PPADMV. Currently, this position is remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though some in-person organizing actions require support when safety and protocols permit. Candidates who are in and from DC will be prioritized.

Requirements:
Community Outreach (75%)

  • In partnership with Volunteer and Events Manager and the DMV Community Organizer, recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers in the District of Columbia as needed to carry out grassroots organizing plans. This includes phone banks, canvassing, rallies, teach-ins, petition drives and other forms of grassroots action, including the formation of local core activist groups and volunteer leadership programs
  • Build local power for the reproductive health movement with a particular focus on supporting, engaging and growing our base of BIPOC supporters and building sustainable community-organizing volunteer teams in collaboration with and support of BIPOC-serving community partners in the District T
  • Take direction from directly impacted people and to contribute expertise in support of community-based initiatives with the purpose of empowering community members and making reproductive rights movement accessible and useful to marginalized communities
  • Supervise the development of supportive student organizations including formal Planned Parenthood Generation Action chapters at local colleges/universities
  • Help to recruit and mobilize key legislative or grasstops supporters in the region.
  • Recruit and supervise interns
  • Complete timely data entry and management. Maintain and utilize the VAN (Voter Action Network) to track events and volunteers
  • Assist management of the health center advocacy program in the three health centers
  • Support DMV Community Organizer in supporting communities, events, and organizing strategies in Prince George and Montgomery County and NOVA
  • Identify, participate in, and uplift community events Digital Organizing (15%)
  • In partnership with PPMW's DMV Community Organizer, implement a digital field organizing program designed to increase the number of Planned Parenthood activists in targeted regions in the District
  • Craft engaging social media posts, cultivate community within Facebook groups, and explore how new social media platforms and features (FB messenger, Instagram, etc) can be used for organizing
  • In partnership with Director of Organizing and Volunteer Programming and the Communications team, help create digital organizing toolkits to increase social media and digital presence and advocacy efforts
  • Contribute content for newsletters, web, stories, and media Operational Support (10%)
  • Keep informed of all aspects of political and legislative issues as they pertain to reproductive rights.
  • Demonstrate Planned Parenthood's In This Together service ethos by ensuring that the people who make our mission possible are supported, cared for, and engaged
  • Provide preparatory assistance for meetings and special events as they pertain to public affairs
  • Support the activities of the Director of Organizing and Volunteer Programming and the Vice President of Public Affairs Qualifications: Ideal candidates will have experience with at least four of the following:
  • At least 2 years as a volunteer or staff doing field organizing
  • Local organizing experience in the region where you are applying to work, preferred
  • Deep experience living or working in BIPOC communities
  • At least one big campaign victory on campus or in your local community - as a volunteer or staff
  • Holding others responsible to quantitative and qualitative goals
  • Leading canvasses or phone banks
  • Working knowledge of VAN, Excel, a computer language, or another tool for data management
  • Workshop facilitation
  • Knowledge of reproductive health issues
  • Spanish-speaking preferred COVID-19 Requirements
  • Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan requires all of its staff to show proof of vaccination (both doses) against Covid-19 including at least one booster shot Additional candidate qualifications include:

This must include strong presentation and public speaking skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of staff and internal and external customers appropriately and professionally, including PPMW's Board of Directors. Mathematical Skills Must possess the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Requires ability to interpret basic financial data and communicate implications to managers. Must have the ability to develop and manage a budget, including elements of cost analysis, cost management and revenue forecasting. Computer Skills Excellent keyboarding skills with high level of accuracy required. Must have demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, possess capacity to learn software programs required for specific position and must be able to access electronic communications, including e-mail, Extranet, Intranet, and Internet.
