  • Job Summary
    • The Assistant Nurse Manager directs, supervises and provides holistic, culturally competent, quality and cost-effective evidence-based nursing care for patients/families. Applies the nursing process within the context of the organization's shared decision-making framework. Collaboratively manages the patient’s transitions across the continuum of care, to assist patients or populations in achieving or maintaining an optimal level of health. Is recognized as a professional role model and clinical expert and promotes a professional environment that supports continuous learning. Delegates and supervises work appropriately. The Assistant Nurse Manager supports, assists and reports to the Nurse Manager and is expected to assume the role of Nurse Manager in his/her absence.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) is required. Master’s degree or Master’s enrolled preferred.
    • Experience
      • Approximately three to four years of progressively more responsible job-related experience. Approximately six to twelve months to gain familiarity with the Hospital environment, department routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties.
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • Licensure as a registered nurse in the District of Columbia is required. BLS required. Assistant Nurse Manager should set a professional goal to become certified as a CRRN within a year on the job.
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • The incumbent in this role must have complex problem solving skills, ability to advise, consult or counsel others to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas or actions,maintain clinical competence and expertise and demonstrates the ability to assume direct patient care responsibilities for a group of patients, as needed and establishes and/or monitors the techniques, policies and procedures used by others who deliver care.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Supports a patient first culture that fosters a high level of patient satisfaction as demonstrated by outcomes data.
    • Facilitates shared decision making at the unit level.
    • Participates in planning and ensuring effective staff skill mix selection, availability and support to meet the needs of the patient population.
    • Collaborates with Nurse Manager to hire, evaluate promote, initiate coaching, counseling and termination of departmental personnel as needed.
    • Establishes, develops, and maintains effective relationships, working agreements and quality partnerships across the continuum to ensure quality patient care; to secure resources to support evidence-based patient care; and to assure compliance with current professional policies, procedures, and protocols and nursing standards.
    • In the absence of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager maintains communication with the Director Operations or designee to ensure there is no disruption in operations
    • Assists in establishing and maintaining a therapeutic and safe environment that facilitates and supports Health Care Team practice, based upon current standards and research to achieve quality patient outcomes.
    • Utilizes approaches and strategies that support and optimize patient care outcomes that are based on the interdisciplinary plan of care, and support a positive patient/family experience.
    • Collaborates with nursing leadership in the assessment of staff competencies. Participates in assessing staff performance against objectives; coaches, mentors, develops and evaluates employees to achieve behaviors aligned with the organization's vision, mission and values, and Magnet criterion and performance standards.*
    • Collaborates with nursing management in the provision of unit in-service programs. Supports staff compliance with mandatory education, licensure, and certification requirements.
    • Collaborates with the leadership team and staff to develop, implement, and evaluate service area goals that support the nursing strategic plan.
    • Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to seek and utilize information (including research findings) to develop, implement and manage a budget which supports organizational objectives, patient care standards and quality of care. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with day-to-day unit productivity and unit operations.
    • Ensures compliance with unit, divisional and hospital policies, procedures, Department of Health,Joint Commission, and CARFregulations/standards and takes corrective action when deficiencies occur.
    • Collaborates with physicians and staff to monitor and analyze available service area performance and outcome data. Identifies and participates in performance improvement activities.
    • Demonstrates competency, including knowledge and behaviors, to meet patient specific needs.
    • Delivers direct patient care as required.
    • Facilitates an environment of patient safety.
    • Supports a professional atmosphere and an environment of staff development that supports a culture of shared decision making and a high level of employee satisfaction as evidenced by outcomes data.
    • Provides clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors and assists the staff with the development of shared accountability.
    • Demonstrates the use of knowledge, skills and abilities attained by reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars, conferences, etc.
    • Attends division meetings and participates on hospital committees and task forces as requested.
    • Demonstrates actions and behaviors that facilitate the process of change necessary to support the strategic plan of Clinical Services and the Network.
    • Actively supports the onboarding and ongoing professional development of associates through routine communication regarding patients plans of care.
    • Other duties as assigned
