Policy, Research and International Affairs (PRI) serves AARP by leading the development and articulation of AARP's public policies, research and insights on the 50+ and issues that matter to them, importing best global practices, and strengthening AARP's reputation for world class expertise and thought leadership.

Summary

Fine-tune your research skills by interning with a dynamic research unit to help advance the mission of AARP on issues that affect midlife and older adults. We are seeking a Master's-level graduate student pursuing a degree in research, marketing, business, or a related field. You must be able to work independently and collaboratively; have an interest in learning about issues affecting individuals age 50 and older; and possess excellent research, organizational, and communication skills.

The Research Department of AARP is looking for a strong Master's-level graduate student to serve as a paid intern. The internship will provide the student with hands-on experience in applied research, data analysis, data visualization, a chance to do meaningful work that impacts society, and the opportunity to make relevant professional connections. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with the largest social welfare organization in the country. It is an excellent way for a talented graduate student interested in research and marketing to acquire hands-on experience as part of a small, committed, and professional team.

The intern will work on a variety of research projects. Tasks include fact-checking reports, writing backgrounds for reports, data mining public datasets, preparing graphics for presentations, conducting and summarizing basic data analyses, creating Infographics, creating Tableau visualizations, and an array of other research-related tasks. The successful candidate will possess excellent writing and communication skills, be inquisitive, organized, detail-oriented, able to multi-task, be knowledgeable of research practices, and comfortable with both standard Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and SPSS. Applicants must have excellent critical thinking/problem-solving skills and an ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues creatively and independently. Applicants must be actively attending an accredited university. Students pursuing their MA, MS, or Ph.D. degrees in social sciences, communications, policy, or business are encouraged to apply.

An intern coordinator will be responsible for providing guidance and workflow management to the intern. The intern will also have access to a mentor and the Director of Health and Health Security Research. The internship has an anticipated start date of June 2021 through December 2021.

Responsibilities

The intern will work on a variety of research projects.

Tasks include:

  • Fact checking reports, writing backgrounds for reports
  • Data mining public datasets
  • Preparing graphics for presentations
  • Conducting and summarizing basic data analyses
  • Creating Infographics
  • Creating Tableau visualizations
  • An array of other research-related tasks

Requirements

Prospective interns must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students, and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program.

  • Intern must be enrolled in a Master's-level degree program in research, marketing, business, or a related field at an accredited college or university
  • Advanced computer skills, including facility with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and familiarity with SPSS, are required; familiarity with data visualization such as Tableau or infographics preferred
  • Must have excellent research, writing, and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and keen attention to details are also required
  • A writing sample

Compensation and Benefits

Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.

As a result of the COVID pandemic, all interviews will be held virtually and all non-essential employees will continue to work remotely until further notice.
