Edelman D.C.'s Earned Media Strategies team, a group of former
reporters and earned media specialists, has an exciting opportunity
for a creative, outside-of-the-box storyteller who lives and
breathes health media and knows the pulse of what's trending in
health news. Storytelling is at the center of our work, and we
understand that in today's media landscape where health headlines
are trending daily, we must grab a reporter's attention and
approach client work like reporters.
In addition to being a part of Edelman DC's Media Strategies
team, the Account Executive will also be part of Edelman's elite
National Health Media Team, a 30-plus person team located in
multiple offices throughout the U.S. that works in collaboration
with corporate, consumer and pharmaceutical/biotech health account
teams on all forms of media strategy and execution for healthcare
If you're an avid health news consumer and health media
obsessive, this role is for you. Our ideal candidate is a
storyteller and media relations guru that can help craft newsworthy
pitches to secure stories primarily on earned media but that also
understands how stories come to life on all platforms. This person
should have a close pulse on the evolving media landscape and how
to counsel clients to navigate these changes. They enjoy building
and maintaining reporter relationships and are always proactively
thinking of story ideas to keep their clients in the news. They
know how to conduct media monitoring and to formulate media lists
that will help clients find the right reporter for their story at
the right time. They are quick thinkers who can manage short-term
requests with long-term projects. The ideal candidate will follow
instructions from supervisors but also take initiative, and overall
show an eagerness and enthusiasm to learn as they take on this next
role in the early stages of their career.
S/he should have a working knowledge of a broad range of health
issues and be able to work in all aspects of health media
relations, from pharma, and corporate health to promoting
consumer-friendly campaigns and press events to highly technical
and regulatory milestones including health policy. We are looking
for a team player who is driven by the promise of delivering
powerful health stories to media and directly to our clients'
audiences. S/he must be able to partner with colleagues in other
departments (account teams, paid, social, etc.) to aid in strategy,
develop media lists, pitches, pitching media as well as familiarity
with all types of news media outlets.
- Solid understanding of basic principles of PR and media
relations; display understanding of the role of media in shaping
- Experience in storytelling on health-related issues, and
familiarity with the media covering these issues and stories that
will resonate with key audiences.
- Draft content to support a variety of PR programs including
media recommendations, POVs and media pitches.
- Craft media lists and conduct research on reporters using tools
like Cision, and MuckRack.
- Monitor media trends and social conversations for reports to
clients and to inspire story ideas.
- Conduct issue and media analyses to advise client activities
- Develop, foster, and preserve strategic relationships with
journalists, press and various media outlets (blogs, tech &
business press, online websites, print, events, and broadcast)
- Present work and counsel to clients related to earned media
programming, challenges and opportunities
- Support knowledge management and other administrative tasks for
the Edelman Media Network; contribute to other Edelman earned media
network initiatives and requests
- Support research projects and any other requests from senior
- Commit to continuous learning and improvement of leadership
skills; set and pursue stretch goals
- Understand Edelman and department vision and his/her own role
in achieving it
- 1-2 years of relevant experience (media relations experience,
blogger, journalist, copywriter)
- Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations,
journalism or related field
- Excellent writing skills and knowledge of AP style
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple
- Tech savvy with an understanding of social media, new media and
excellent computer skills
- Knowledge of online tracking and monitoring tools
