Job Description Summary:

Under direct supervision and clearly defined procedures, performs a variety of tasks that focus on providing learning opportunities and exposure to a wide range of activities. Duties will range from supporting research efforts, including collection, assembly, and tabulation of data; supporting the drafting of written materials, including but not limited to white papers, one-pagers, and correspondence; contributing to the development of adjunctive materials to support major deliverables, and performing routine tasks, as needed.

This job is a post-graduate temporary position for the summer and will span an approximate duration of three months, anticipated to cover the late May- August 2021 timeframe. The role is intended for graduate students to obtain professional experience and training in the field of public health, with a focus on health policy. The student hire will support specific activities of the Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic, a special initiative within the office of the president at the National Academy of Medicine.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Undertakes one or more short-term projects designed to assist with or to enhance ongoing study projects. Performs subject-oriented literature searches. Gathers references. Participates in other research efforts including collection, assembly, and tabulation of data and summarizing literature. May assist in analyzing basic research results. Assists with drafting written materials, including but not limited to white papers, one-pagers, and correspondence, and contributing to the development of adjunctive materials to support major deliverables. Proofreads and copyedits documents. May perform administrative tasks such as word processing, copying, faxing, filing, answering and screening calls, and compiling and coordinating mailings. Creating, maintaining, and updating records, databases, and files. May assist with preparations for teleconferences, webinars, or meetings, including compiling briefing and meeting materials, and providing administrative support as needed. May attend relevant meetings, training classes, and workshops.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to solve problems with supervisory consultation or by following procedures. Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions as the job dictates. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with an ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge. Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree college or university program.

Minimum Experience: None.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to manager/supervisor. Supervisor is available to organize work, set objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.

Work Environment: Office environment, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.

Any qualification to be considered equivalent, in lieu of stated minimum, requires the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.
