Ethicon Endo Surgery Inc., a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Principal Software Engineer, New Product Development, in the Cincinnati, OH area, or remote within the United States!

The Ethicon Surgical Care business is comprised of the following businesses within Johnson & Johnson: Ethicon Surgical Care, Ethicon Biosurgery, Ethicon Energy, Ethicon Endomechanics, Ethicon Robotics, Megadyne, NeuWave, and Torax. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market-leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. The Principal Software Engineer will make vital contributions to the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline and transform patient care through innovation. They are responsible for working with our NPD teams to design and develop product software for use in cutting edge medical devices and associated capital equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop embedded product software to integrate with mechanical, electrical, and distributed computing systems.
  • Develop test tools to test product software in an integrated environment.
  • Translate high-level customer needs into technical options while analyzing trade-offs and business impact.
  • Convert chosen technical options into formal testable written requirements
  • Document designs and specifications per design control processes.
  • Conform to Industry Standards for Medical Device Software (IEC 62304)
  • Generate and present technical material to partners at all levels of the organization.
  • Leverage Agile software development methodology to lead software development activities
  • Mentor junior members of the engineering staff to expand design team abilities and establish good working practices.

    Required

    :
    • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
    • 10 years experience in a direct software engineering or software architectural role in a New Product Development environment
    • Proven experience with embedded electrical and/or software design
    • Deep understanding of various embedded/system software design tools, operating systems, and programming languages (e.g. Jira, Jama, Linux, QNX, Qt, C/C++/C#, JSON-RPC or Python, etc.)
    • Experience developing software for embedded Real-Time Operating Systems (QNX, Wind River, Yocto, etc.)
    • Experience developing embedded software systems in C++
    • Work experience with Systems Engineering activities: requirements management, requirements development, and verification (e.g. Enterprise Architect, Integrity, JAMA, etc.)
    • Demonstrated ability working with system-level tools and processes used for requirements management, risk management, issue tracking, and test automation (e.g. Google Test, NUnit, JUnit, etc.)
    • Creation and management of interface control specifications for systems including electrical, software, and mechanical requirements
    • Demonstrated ability working across subject areas with internal and external partners
    • Strong collaboration, proven technical leadership capabilities, and conflict resolution skills
    • Experience with Distributed Data Services (DDS), e.g. (RTI Connext, OpenDDS, MQTT, CANopen, or similar distributed data sharing libraries)
    • Ability to travel up to 10%, domestic and international travel
      Preferred:
      • Advanced Degree
      • Demonstrated ability working with secure boot and embedded system security development
      • Experience with protocol connectivity over Ethernet Networks, LAN, WAN, Cloud
      • Experience within a medical device or other highly regulated environment
      • Experience with external standards such as IEC 62366, IEC 62304, or IEC 61508
      • Experience debugging embedded hardware systems
      • Design control experience
      • Experience developing Qt applications and/or Qt QML plugs
      • Creation and management of interface control specifications for electrical, software, and mechanical systems
      • Ability to work at the Cincinnati, OH site
