Job Description The Health Promotion, Practice, and Innovation (HPPI) Portfolio, within EDC's US Division has an opening for a full-time Project Associate (I) reporting to the Director of Health and Behavioral Health Initiatives.--The HPPI portfolio includes projects related to trauma, violence and injury prevention, substance abuse prevention, and suicide prevention. This position has a specific focus in suicide prevention, which is one of EDC's priority areas of expertise. The Project Associate I is expected to collaborate across teams, particularly the Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), and work on other EDC projects. The position is eligible to work in EDC's Washington, DC or Waltham, MA offices and is open to telecommuters. All EDC offices will remain closed through at least June 2021. This is a full-time position that involves supporting capacity among health and behavioral health care (HBH) organizations and providers to better identify and care for people at risk for suicide. Key functions for advancing specific clinical priorities in suicide prevention will include developing innovative resources, contributing to training materials, maintaining strategic partnerships, and convening key leaders in suicide prevention. The ideal candidate understands the public health approach to suicide prevention, and comprehensive suicide prevention and care in a variety of health care settings (e.g., the Zero Suicide framework). Specific experience working within a health system or setting (clinical or non-clinical role), with health policy, administration, finance, or with underserved populations and communities at higher risk for suicide is desired. The person in this position will write content and design new material for web and other resources, provide support to organizations and/or individuals to better understand, utilize and implement these resources, and will support project management (e.g., tracking deliverables, creating and monitoring timelines). Additionally, the individual in this role is expected to have a high level of confidence and professionalism interacting with different types of stakeholders, and exceptional communication skills (i.e., both verbally and written). This position may support other EDC projects as needed and assist in Business Development. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures. The Project Associate (I) will support EDC's suicide prevention priorities through a variety of capacities and functions that support work across multiple projects including:

  • Producing and managing development of resources to meet project or program objectives including summary recommendations, instructional materials, and other written products
  • Providing consultation to HBH organizations on suicide prevention best practices (e.g., guidance on implementing evidence-based interventions, translating research evidence in to practice changes)
  • Interpreting data or research findings and developing clear summaries for stakeholders
  • Moderating, designing, and/or speaking during webinars, conference presentations, and meetings with external partners
  • Facilitating adult learning and web-based learning (e.g., Communities of Practice, work groups, webinars)
  • Supporting and/or leading design, production, and dissemination of high-profile resources for the field
  • Supporting the Director and staff in assessing needs in suicide prevention and related fields, and offering conceptual support and recommendations for developing materials to meet project deliverables--
  • Assisting with updating and improving tools and resources that help health care systems and providers provide safer, evidence-based suicide care
  • Leading parts of projects or coordinating sections of larger projects (e.g., project start-up tasks, establishing project plans, managing timelines)
  • Assisting with manuscript preparation
  • Assisting with both within and cross-project communications
  • Completing other tasks and projects as assigned --The Project Associate (I) provides support to project staff, including:
    • Serving as backup to Director when needed
    • Monitoring contractual compliance
    • Maintaining records
    • Preparing recommendations
    • Drafting performance reports
    • Writing and developing materials
    • Disseminating information, including website content
    • Developing presentations
    • Managing administrative procedures
    • Contributing to design and implementation of business monitoring systems
    • Suggesting ideas for improved efficiency or future focus
    • Supporting project procurement
    • Identifying & recruiting technical consultants; developing their scope of work --The Project Associate (I):
      • Coordinates administrative and logistical tasks for webinars, virtual events, and TA projects
      • Coordinates project start-up tasks (i.e. establishes project plans and timelines)
      • Facilitates project teamwork and feedback exchanges
      • Collaborates on troubleshooting complex problems, proposing initiatives, and recommending or negotiating solutions
      • Acts as liaison between home offices and field-based staff as needed
      • Coordinates communications and project activities
      • Trains and provides guidance or administrative direction to junior staff; may supervise junior or support staff; may coordinate the work of less experienced staff
      • May travel within the US up to 5-6 times per year Qualifications This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. Preferred Skills and Experience:
        • Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative relationships with colleagues, partners, and funders over long distances.
        • Collaboration: Ability to work both on a team and independently without close oversight. Skilled as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within outside EDC. Skilled at facilitating consensus-building and priority setting, especially with priority partners outside EDC.
        • Management Experience: Experience managing parts of projects and processes to ensure that high quality deliverables are produced on time.
        • Content Knowledge: A strong understanding of the public health approach to suicide prevention. Experience in the mental health, behavioral health, or suicide prevention fields especially as related to the Zero Suicide initiative. Experience working in HBH setting or state mental and behavioral health and suicide prevention departments/agencies.
        • Subject Matter Consultation: Experience in providing consultation on suicide prevention best practices to clients via phone, webinar, and email strongly preferred. Experience working with diverse communities and cultures strongly preferred.
        • Training Experience: A strong understanding of adult learning principles as they relate to virtual and in-person trainings.
        • Personal Qualities: A professional who excels in a mission-driven, rapidly evolving environment. Someone who exhibits flexibility, enthusiasm, responsiveness, aptitude for details, a positive attitude, creativity, strategic and analytical thinking, self-motivation, attentiveness to cultural differences, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to be proactive and to produce quality work under tight deadlines.
        • Technology: Applicant embraces technology and uses it to increase efficiency and support cross-team communication. Knowledge of administrative systems and techniques, as well as information/knowledge management.
        • Communications: Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials and conversations. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in supervisory relationships, with colleagues, and with project partners and funders. Experience developing and reviewing written materials for outside audiences.
        • Organization: Ability to manage time and successfully work on multiple projects at once. Specific requirements:
          • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training & education
          • Master's degree or equivalent combination of training & education preferred
          • With Bachelor's degree, at least 4 years related research, education, international development, or--administrative coordination experience, requiring computer competence
          • With Master's degree, at least 3 years related experience (as above)
          • Demonstrable organizational and troubleshooting skills
          • Strong analytical skills and aptitude for details
          • Ability to lead projects independently and to also consult with colleagues and senior staff as appropriate
