The Surginet System Analyst (SSA) provides leadership in operational planning, projects, enhancements, and implementations for the surgical information system related to the Cerner Perioperative Surgical system (SURGINET) and other interfaced clinical systems. With the goal of achieving a world-class electronic medical record for Perioperative Services, the SSA is responsible for clinical informatics quality, stake holding for patient safety, quality measures, process improvement, and clinical end user efficiency; works collaboratively with Information Technology (IT) resources. Coordinates and oversees the Surginet application from an end-user perspective, initial overview training and user access, and has primary responsibility for the database functions, including, but not limited to, the procedure module, preference card module, primary tables (staff, position, roles, S, etc.), Supply File management, SNSurgiNet.exe (PowerChart clone), surgical module of SchApptBook, SNReportBuilder, PowerVision, etc. This individual serves as the IT application expert within the department and works in conjunction with OR and PeriAnesthesia clinical leadership and information resources to maintain and optimize the application. Understands system architecture and table structure; oversees change control process on a departmental level, builds additional sites as the needs of the Center demands; serves as subject matter expert with additional applications (i.e., PeopleSoft - Supply, Finance Registration (STAR-currently) files, Cerner upgrades; serves as project leader with technical aspects of additional applications (i.e., Compass, other). Offers assistance and training on different application functionality either directly or creates a system to oversee. Manages multiple aspects of projects, including evaluations, specifications, testing and ongoing documentation. This position services as the technical and clinical expert and assists with ongoing system maintenance according to established policies, professional nursing and clinical standards, safety and quality standards and metrics, and accrediting and licensing requirements.Minimum Education BSN Specific Requirements and Preferences Masters preferred, Clinical Informatics (preferred); BSN required Minimum Work Experience 8 years Specific Requirements and Preferences Minimum of 8 years Nursing experience required, preferred 5 years with pediatric PACU, OR, RN anesthesia experience. Clinical experience is paramount; leadership experience is strongly preferred in addition to diverse surgical specialty acumen. (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge Possesses superior organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills; Minimum two (2) years' experience working with computer operating systems, databases, related hardware, and software programs in a Perioperative Services environment. Experience in creating training and education materials, and conducting individual or group training sessions using commonly used software applications (Excel A Plus, Word, PPT, other); Demonstrated knowledge of the governing structure of Perioperative Services. Demonstrated knowledge of the Cerner EMR clinical documentation. Demonstrated knowledge about surgery information systems and clinical practice and care coordination related ro the OR, PeriAnestehsia and Anesthesia. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously. Demonstrate skills in planning, organizing, directing, and managing. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with directors, administrators, managers, physicians and staff. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people in stressful situations. Ability to represent Perioperative Services throughout the organization as a leader, planner, facilitator and liaison. Demonstrated knowledge of computer hardware and software components, Windows terminology, network and database software applications, remote access and other information system-related technologies. Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheets, word-processing, graphic presentations and database information. Ability to learn, maintain, and develop computer technology systems and Surginet application used within Perioperative Services. Ability to work collaboratively with outside industry and vendors to help solve business and process issues using information technology. Clinical expert with ability to represent optimization needs for clinical quality & safety, regulatory, and data extraction for associated reporting requirements. Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse in District of Columbia Functional Accountabilities Professional Practice/Safety/Quality 1. Interacts positively with multiple hospital departments to build and foster collaborative relationships with constituents, including, but not limited to: Pharmacy, Radiology, Lab, Health Information Management, Quality Improvement, Sterile Processing Department, Patient Access Services, Patient Care Units/Nursing, Nursing Clinical Informatics, and Labor/Management Partnership, BIOMED, Supply Chain, Finance. 2. Provides performance monitoring reports, including variance reporting against budget, and against internal and national benchmarks. 3. Continually build knowledge base relative to workflow, safety and quality measures, and process improvement 4. Organize and/or participate in IT, operational, technical, and strategic planning components and outcomes. 5. Serves as a consultant to department staff and physicians to interpret data. 6. Manage the identification and resolution of problems involving clinical processes and software applications, information access, and training requirements. EMR (Surginet) Maintenance & Development and Clinical Coordination 1. Analyzes impact of process or technical tool changes on existing processes, tools and interfaces based on knowledge of interdependencies of related functions and systems. Works closely with IT, consulting, operations management to achieve stated goals and desired outcomes. 2. Development of standard reporting packages for use in monitoring operating room performance including development of performance benchmarks and written descriptions of variance from benchmarks. Ensure surgical applications meet or exceed professional standards of clinical practice. 3. Ensure that all changes to system are adequately tested by clinicians prior to implementation. 4. Performs special projects, reconciliations, research, and analysis to assure system functionality and data integrity. 5. Work directly with IT for technical and clinical issue resolution and custom configuration requests. 6. Ensure multiple opportunities for clinical end user input to design and implementation of clinical informatics services. 7. Collaborate with leadership in the identification and enhancement of work place design and process improvement opportunities. 8. Utilize effective communication skills in "translating" the needs of constituents to the IT team and relating the impact of constituent requests and application limitations. 9. Consult with IT on setting security level access for all end-users. 1. Integrates workflows of multidisciplinary treatment teams. 1. Collaborate with the development of clinical decision support tools such as alerts, reminders, order sets, reports, templates, and quality metrics to monitor compliance. 1. Organize and manage meetings with Leaders and Director, Perioperative IT to identify and prioritize requests for further development and application upgrades and enhancements. 1. Manage system input changes prior to implementation and clinical/operations use 1. Works with Surgical Services managers to establish and document the definitions for the items in the surgery information systems files (supplies, preference cards, pick tickets, etc.). 1. Develops and monitors all systems guidelines to assure data security and validity, as well as efficient and appropriate system usage by all staff. 1. Collaborate and take responsibility for writing or enhancing policies and procedures related to downtime management 1. Develop, manage and maintain clinical policies, procedures, and protocols that support the "Information Management" standards for applicable regulatory governance bodies. 1. Monitor and manage documentation compliance tools and provide system data and reports to support IT compliance efforts. Leadership & Staff Development 1. Meets with leaders of Perioperative Services to set and help implement department IT goals, priorities, learning and staff development needs. 2. Participate with IT and Clinical Services Educators in ensuring effective end-user orientation and training programs for all clinical system users, including maintaining Surginet training enviroment. 3. Participate in managing the departments vision and direction for computer systems, process design, data management and related processes. Member of Perioperative IT Governance Committee. 4. Maintains a positive working relationship with Perioperative leadership, staff and educators and acts as a liaison between Perioperative Services and ancillary departments, physicians and vendors using relevant information and effective communication skills. 5. Use creativity in meeting the training needs of large numbers of end users who work multiple shifts with numerous priorities 6.
