Job SummaryAssesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients in an outpatient, ambulatory care setting while maintaining appropriate documentation. In collaboration with the patient and family, provides theory-based professional nursing care and coordinates care delivery with the physician and other members of the health care team within the scope of the RN license. Follows department specific policies and procedures, and maintains competencies of assigned department.


  • EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; RN required, BSN preferred.

  • EXPERIENCE: 3 years experience post graduation as a staff nurse. Experience in specialty area assigned preferred.

  • LICENSE/CERT/REG: Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland or a Multi-state, Compact-state or license eligible. CPR certification required. ACLS certification required by completion of introductory period.

  • SKILLS: Demonstrated effective communication and problem-solving skills. Basic computer skills.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assists the provider and site administrator with data collection and analysis. Records services and diagnosis on patient encounter forms to facilitate appropriate billing.

    • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

    • Delegates activities to unlicensed staff in accordance with system policies, principles of Patient-Centered Care, and the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, and retains responsibility for these delegated activities through the delivery of patient care. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients at all times.

    • Demonstrates patient and family advocacy by providing for the emotional support of patient and families during the crisis of illness. Provides appropriate comfort measures.

    • Develops, coordinates and documents ambulatory patient care plans in collaboration with the patient, family and other members of the healthcare team. Formulates nursing diagnosis as necessary. Evaluates the patient's response to treatment and progress toward identified goals and revises the plan of care as appropriate.

    • Identifies and responds to questions and requests from internal and external customers in a courteous, positive manner. Responds to customer service complaints in a timely and appropriate manner.

    • Identifies educational and health teaching needs of patients and families. Uses available resources to directly educate patient and family members based on an assessment of educational needs. Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching and provides further education as needed. Incorporates the principles of patient-centered care.

    • Identifies potential and actual patient safety issues and acts accordingly per MedStar policy and procedure.

    • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients at all times.

    • Maintains high customer service standards. Proactively addresses customer concerns.

    • May serve as the primary backup for other clinical positions at the site.

    • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

    • Performs venipuncture to obtain blood samples for testing and other duties within standard of practice.

    • Ensures laboratory specimens are properly labeled, necessary paperwork is completed and specimens are sent to the laboratory for timely processing. Documents and files all laboratory reports.

    • Prepares patients for physical examination and/or specimen collection. Assists providers with invasive and non-invasive procedures and examinations. Dispenses, monitors, orders and administers (by mouth, injection or IV) in accordance with the provider's plan of care.

    • Responds to patient telephone inquiries, performs telephone triage and documents patient phone calls in accordance with nursing standard of care. Communicates clinical information clearly and accurately in verbal and written format. Clearly and accurately documents pertinent information in the patient's on-line medical record. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
