PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Within the Leidos Biomedical Research Inc.'s Clinical Research Directorate, the Clinical Monitoring Research Program (CMRP) provides high-quality comprehensive and strategic operational support to the high-profile domestic and international clinical research initiatives of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Clinical Center (CC), National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Since its inception in 2001, CMRP's ability to provide rapid responses, high-quality solutions, and to recruit and retain experts with a variety of backgrounds to meet the growing research portfolios of NCI, NIAID, CC, NHLBI, NIAMS, NCATS, NINDS, and NIMH has led to the considerable expansion of the program and its repertoire of support services. CMRP's support services are strategically aligned with the program's mission to provide comprehensive, dedicated support to assist National Institutes of Health researchers in providing the highest quality of clinical research in compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining data integrity, and protecting human subjects. For the scientific advancement of clinical research, CMRP services include comprehensive clinical trials, regulatory, pharmacovigilance, protocol navigation and development, and programmatic and project management support for facilitating the conduct of 400+ Phase I, II, and III domestic and international trials on a yearly basis. These trials investigate the prevention, diagnosis, treatment of, and therapies for cancer, influenza, HIV, and other infectious diseases and viruses such as hepatitis C, tuberculosis, malaria, and Ebola virus; heart, lung, and blood diseases and conditions; parasitic infections; rheumatic and inflammatory diseases; and rare and neglected diseases. CMRP's collaborative approach to clinical research and the expertise and dedication of staff to the continuation and success of the program's mission has contributed to improving the overall standards of public health on a global scale.
The Clinical Monitoring Research Program (CMRP) provides quality Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner clinical research services in support to the National Cancer Institute's Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch (ETIB) and Medical Oncology Branch for activities conducted in out-patient and in-patient clinics. Support services include various negotiable shift schedules (8 hr. 10 hr. 12 hr. or 24 hr) including evening and weekend work, which are performed in conjunction with a multidisciplinary clinical team providing comprehensive health care to patients in a research environment.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs assessments by obtaining comprehensive medical histories and by performing physical examinations
  • Manages patients with complex and difficult multi-system aspects
  • Orders, performs and interprets basic laboratory diagnostic/treatment tests and procedures
  • Assesses needs and/or problem areas and plans appropriate therapeutic measures
  • Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings and determines which findings need further evaluation and/or collaboration assessment
  • Provides continuity-of-care, counsels, supports and educates patients, family members and staff on matters relating to health and research studies/protocols
  • Participates in clinical rounds and meetings/conferences related to study protocols and research
  • Prepares progress notes and dictation summary documentation
  • Maintains clinical competence in an area of specialty practice, integrating the art and science of both nursing and medicine into practice
  • Ensures compliance with applicable licensure/certification requirements, applicable healthcare standards and governmental laws and regulations as well as policies, procedures and philosophy in nature
  • Records, enters, and retrieves clinical data using a medical informatics system
  • Obtains informed consent forms
  • May provide supervision of lower level clinical staff
  • Position is located at the National Institutes of Health located in Bethesda, Maryland Qualifications
    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
    To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
    • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
    • A Physician Assistant applicant must be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Must have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination. Must be Maryland State Board eligible.
    • A Nurse Practitioner applicant must possess a degree/diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Must have active, current registration as professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must have appropriate certification issued by the appropriate certifying body the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be Maryland State Board eligible.
    • All applicants : Eligibility includes documentation of a pending Maryland license
    • Graduate of a program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for a Physician Assistant Program (ARC-PA), Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in the State of Maryland, or possess a current license as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland
    • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
    • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible nurse practitioner experience or relevant physician assistant experience
    • Knowledge of relationships between diseases, health assessment, counseling, diagnostic testing procedures, broad base clinical areas such as pathophysiology, psychosocial theory, pharmacology, and primary medical management practices
    • Ability to conduct studies according to established Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the Clinical Center's Administrative Policies of the operational clinic
    • Working knowledge of prevention, etiology, therapies and new research developments
    • Must be able to work evening and weekend shifts
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
      Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
      • Direct work on oncology research and/or transplantation
      • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients and/or health care providers
      • Completion of an oncology research or transplant training program
