IRU is a 12 bed Intestinal Rehabilitation and Gastroenterology Unit. Nurses work with ostomies, central lines, G and J tubes, NG tubes, and total parental nutrition all in an effort to slowly rehabilitate the intestines. Psycho social components of this illness (and other GI illnesses) complicate the care. The Healthcare Team approach is particularly important in meeting all the complex needs of the patients and families. The nursing staff works very closely with the family and there is a large teaching component to their work. The Intestinal Rehab Team at CNMC has achieved a 98% survivability rate for Short Bowel Syndrome. The unit runs at a fast pace and the children are adorable!! All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. Minimum Education BSN Graduated from an approved school of nursing. (Preferred) Minimum Work Experience 1 year RN experience (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge The licensed Registered Nurse will successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at Children's National. Keep knowledge base current with new information or changes in specialty area. Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse in District of Columbia Registered Nurse licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia dependent upon location of practice.
