Job Announcement The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents'' equitable access to health services and information. The Health Department is currently seeking skilled and passionate Public Health Nurses (PHN) to lead epidemiological investigations of COVID-19 cases and outbreaks in high risk or high priority settings. Once the threat of the pandemic has resolved, this position will support assigned school health program sites in the areas of care coordination and health promotion. Responsibilities include: Case Investigation - Performs communicable disease/epidemiological response to emerging public health risks. Leads epidemiological investigations of communicable disease cases and outbreaks in multiple settings including homes, food establishments, daycare and nursing home facilities, schools, commercial settings, and community events. Coordinates and manages various epidemiological investigations through education, coaching and evaluation of documented work. Documents communicable disease case and outbreak epidemiological surveillance data in various electronic and paper-based systems/reports. Responsible for providing initial and on-going monitoring of individuals placed in isolation and quarantine, if ever warranted, on district-wide basis. Provides health promotion and education to county residents, health professionals and businesses. Addresses questions from clients, the public, and health care professionals. School Health - Utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach, provides a variety of health services to diverse populations within the school community. Health services and interventions include outreach (home/school visits), community assessment, care coordination, case finding, disease prevention, health promotion and school health program development for students, families, and communities. Ideal candidates possess strong working knowledge of computers and technology to collect data, disseminate information and communicate findings across the program. Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement. This position is temporarily responding to needs resulting from COVID-19. This position is designated as essential and is part of the county''s emergency response which operates seven days a week. Shift work may be required with hours during evenings and weekends during the emergency response. Based on emergency response deployment needs, this position will transition to a routine work schedule as determined by the emergency response service needs. NOTE: This position includes a signing bonus of $2,000 for new hires. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor''s degree in Nursing; plus one year of work experience in a public health/community health setting; or two years of full-time post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education. UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS: This position may be underfilled as a Public Health Nurse I (Grade S22, $54,219.36 - $90,365.81 ). The Minimum Qualifications for the Public Health Nurse I are: graduation from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a Bachelor''s Degree in nursing as determined by the Virginia State Board of Nursing; Possession of current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia - a contingency employment offer may be extended for candidates eligible to take the Registered Nurse examination. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Possession of current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Valid motor vehicle driver''s license. AED - Required within 60 days CPR -Required within 60 days PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience providing health services to school aged children in ethnically diverse populations. Experience conducting epidemiological investigations of communicable disease cases and outbreaks. Must have a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students, parents and colleagues. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners. Work independently and on interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications. At least one year of direct supervisory experience of paraprofessional staff or demonstrated work experience monitoring and directing the work of others. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a sanction screening, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, tuberculosis test, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
