Health Care Without Harm's Climate and Health program supports the health care sector in reducing its carbon footprint, building climate-smart and resilient hospitals and communities, and mobilizing health care's ethical, economic, and political influence to advance the transition to a low-carbon future. Working closely with Health Care Without Harm, Practice Greenhealth, is the leading nonprofit membership and network organization for sustainable health care, delivering environmental solutions to more than 1,300 members throughout the United States. Position Description The Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program Director will have overall responsibility to develop, lead, and coordinate HCWH's Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program, as well as to collaborate with staff across all Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) entities and external partners. Primary Objectives Lead the strategic development, day-to-day management and implementation, and administrative oversight of HCWH's Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program, while working in close partnership with team members around major areas of work and supporting safer chemicals and procurement work across all HCWH entities. Essential Functions Develop annual goals, plans, and targets for the Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program in alignment with HCWH's global chemicals and procurement agendas and related efforts across all HCWH entities and in collaboration with team members. Translate the Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program strategy into actions to be pursued by staff and external partners, including hospital members and collaborating NGOs. Convene a cross-organizational procurement working group to align effort and priorities across the HCWH entities. Supervise and guide the Practice Greenhealth Director of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing. Shape organizational positions on chemicals and procurement issues and develop recommendations for action. Develop and maintain relationships with key hospitals and external partners in support of Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program initiatives. Identify and develop new tools and resources in support of Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program initiatives; maintain and update existing tools and resources as needed. Coordinate Safer Chemicals Market Transformation Group to advance Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program priorities and support health system leaders in their chemicals work. Lead Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program participation in annual CleanMed conference, including developing internal proposals and recruiting speakers, reviewing external proposals, serving on internal conference coordinating team, speaking and/or moderating sessions, and participating in other conference planning as needed. Participate in public outreach and education on chemicals issues, including presentations at national conferences, webinars, and interviews with media. Collaborate with Practice Greenhealth colleagues, including the awards team in selecting Chemicals Circle of Excellence Award winners, member engagement team in responding to chemical issues raised by hospital members, and procurement team in developing purchasing specifications and related tools. Provide support to Greenhealth Exchange colleagues, including through the development of environmental criteria for products to be put on contract and review of products for ingredient safety. Track public policy developments to inform the strategy of the Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program and interpret policies for organization staff and health care partners. Develop and manage the Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program budget and financials, including monthly review of financial reports and support for mid-year adjustments. Work with the development team to secure program funding, manage current grants, and draft funder proposals and reports. Oversee website and virtual presence of Safer Chemicals and Procurement Program and draft content updates in collaboration with communications team. Develop and manage contracts with partner organizations and individuals in coordination with HCWH staff. Review and approve staff/contractor reports; approve expense reimbursement requests and contractor invoices for payment. Qualifications Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. Minimum Experience: Proven track record of at least five years in program development and/or advocacy. Minimum Field of Expertise: Familiarity with health care sector, public health, and environmental issues, or familiarity with environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) for a major entity. Preferred Education: Advanced degree in public health, public policy, sustainability, or equivalent. Preferred Experience: Proven track record of at least five years in program development working on environmental health or sustainability issues, including through market campaigns and/or policy advocacy. Preferred Field of Expertise: Work experience in advocacy, sustainability, or environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) as part of a health care organization. What's In It For You?
