Job Details Company Overview Position Summary Information Basic Function Reporting to the Vice President of Student Services, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Student Engagement and Retention provides a strategic vision in support of a comprehensive and integrated student engagement program to enhance student sense of belonging at Northern Virginia Community College. The AVP for Student Engagement and Retention provides leadership and accountability for the administration, development, assessment, and improvement of student services and student experiences that meet and support Northern Virginia Community College's commitment to access and inclusion. The AVP for Student Engagement and Retention will coordinate and work collaboratively to provide college-wide support to student success programs to include NOVA's First Year Experience (FYE), advising, career services, student intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports, student clubs, and student academic support services. Duties and Responsibilities The AVP for Student Engagement and Retention will be responsible for expanding and adding depth to the implementation and growth of college-wide student success programs. The AVP for Student Engagement and Retention will: - Support the college-wide advising redesign; provide leadership throughout implementation and delivery college-wide. - Work with appropriate staff at the college and vendors to make sure appropriate levels of support are offered to various groups of service providers college-wide. - Provide leadership and support for the development and delivery of college-wide advising training and expansion of virtual advising. - Oversee IPass management and training at NOVA. - Work with academic and student services leadership to define, implement holistic student support across the college. - Work with faculty and leadership to move the College Success Skills course towards facilitating better student outcomes during the early stages. - Enhance the onboarding and orientation process with the assistance of technology - Help build and expand student equity programs. - Provide leadership and support for student success programs. - Conduct periodic evaluations of programs, services, procedures and policies to ensure that the student programs are effective, innovative, proactive, anticipatory and responsive to student needs. Utilize analytical results and data to design, develop and implement innovative and effective student recruitment and retention programs, services and procedures. Minimum Qualifications - Master's degree required, preferably in education, student services, higher education administration or a related field. - Demonstrated experience in higher education with increasing levels of responsibility, including demonstrated experience at a supervisory level. - Demonstrated experience in student success initiatives to include demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and assessing outcomes for student engagement and retention. - Demonstrated experience in program development, faculty training, and organizing and leading projects. - Demonstrated experience collecting and utilizing data to achieve desired outcomes. - Experience working in teams to reach consensus, conflict resolutions, and solutions. - Experience working with diverse group of people, including professional staff, students, faculty, parents, system-wide colleagues, community partners and media. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write persuasively with a focus on organization and presentation to a variety of constituencies. Preferred Qualifications - PhD in education, student services, higher education administration or a related field. - Significant experience in higher education with increasing levels of responsibility, including demonstrated experience at a supervisory level. - Significant experience in student success initiatives to include demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and assessing outcomes for student engagement and retention. - Significant experience in program development, faculty training, and organizing and leading projects. - Experience with research practices and procedures in higher education. - Experience working at a community college. - Experience interpreting and applying college policies. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Extensive knowledge of policies and procedures that govern colleges. - Ability to analyze issues and uses foresight and creativity in recommending viable courses of action and advising on policies in matters dealing with students. - Innovative thinker and student advocate philosophy. - Ability to formulate conclusions and make recommendations to promote continuous improvement. - Considerable skill in mainframe/PC applications as a resource tool, including CRM software. - Comprehensive understanding of higher education issues overall and specifically in relation to student success. - Ability to give presentations to a variety of audiences. - Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills. - Ability to organize and track multiple projects. - Ability to translate complex issues to faculty and staff. - Ability to interact effectively with faculty, administrators, students, and the community. - Conversant in technological innovations. - Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills demonstrated by the ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of diverse people, including professional staff, students, faculty, parents, system-wide colleagues, community partners, and media. Ability to write clearly and concisely in different styles as appropriate to the audience.
