ABOUT THE DC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD (DC PCSB)Every day, we're making it better for 46,000+ public charter school students, families, and communities to receive a quality education that makes them feel valued and prepared for lifelong learning, fulfilling careers, and economic security.ABOUT THE ROLEAs the authorizer of public charter schools in DC, a critical part of our work is financial oversight. DC's 69 public charter schools, whose assets exceed $2 billion, collectively spend more than $1 billion of taxpayer funds. Each charter school manages its own finances. Our job is financial oversight - ensuring that schools are properly accounting for their revenues and expenditures, are not engaging in fraud, are following the law, and are financially healthy. That's where you come in. Reporting to the Director of Finance, who heads School Finance, we trust you with the ongoing evaluation of fiscal performance of the charter schools we authorize.Overview of RoleWorking directly with school leaders, you'll review monthly and quarterly financial statements, budgets, variances, and other information to monitor for fiscal stability and compliance. When appropriate, you'll work with the schools to develop conditions and corrective active plans and monitor those conditions and plans for compliance. In addition, you'll conduct in-depth financial reviews of existing schools every five years and review and provide analyses and recommendations for new charter school applications and amendments. In partnership with the Director of Finance and the Data Team, you'll support the development of systems that create greater automation and efficiency in the reporting, collection, and organization of financial data. You'll work with the Director of Finance to create the annual Financial Analysis Report (FAR), ensuring the timely production of high-quality school data and financial analyses. An additional component of your success is measured when you have demonstrated you've become a trusted go-to for both internal and external stakeholders, having developed relationships with school leaders and finance managers. You'll pioneer new and different approaches and strategies for working with many schools having a wide variety of needs.Job ResponsibilitiesEnsure and monitor timely collection of financial data and documents.Prepare, update, and publish financial reports periodically in our Transparency Hub which may be accessed online. Interact frequently with schools and DC PCSB staff, and periodically with auditors and others, in collecting data and troubleshooting data collection issues in collaboration with the DC PCSB Data Engineering Team.Review financial data for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.Synthesize, analyze, and evaluate financial data while developing questions, providing observations, and sharing recommendations.Draft reports and present to our Board and Finance Committee summaries and recommendations.Ensure financial information is current on our DC PCSB website. Assist the school finance team on various projects and tasks as requested.Support the internal finance team as designated by leadership.Competencies and QualificationsYour technical experience in accounting, financial analysis, and forensic accounting has given you exposure to a variety of difficult situations which you've navigated successfully.You bring confidence, sincerity, and credibility to build trusted relationships with school leaders and other external and internal stakeholders.You have had several years of experience working with audited financial statements of many organizations, preferably including nonprofits or government entities.You're able to have difficult conversations when potential issues are identified, and you know when to escalate those issues to the Director of Finance.You are punctual and dependable, with excellent customer service skills.You maintain a positive attitude for routine, repetitive matters, and complex matters, and are happy to roll up your sleeves when needed.You have strong attention to detail with expert skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, including extensive modeling and pivot tables.You excel in drafting clear, concise, and compelling reports, routinely utilizing tables, footnotes, tracked changes, special formats, and other features in Word. In addition, you are a great listener with an open mind and speak articulately and persuasively while fostering collaboration.You have considerable analytical database management skills and are quick to learn new systems.You initiate your workflows and take pride in a sense of accomplishment in performing important and routine tasks under tight deadlines, with changing priorities and minimal supervision.Your curiosity drives you to enjoy complex analyses and innovate in response to a varied portfolio with diverse needs.Your bachelor's degree includes a concentration in accounting and finance.A master's degree in accounting or finance, Big-4 accounting experience, and/or an active CPA license helps set you apart.CompensationSalary is competitive and commensurate with prior experience in a similar role. DC PCSB offers a generous comprehensive benefits plan, and the annual salary band for this position is $95,000 - $105,000.
