Job Description:

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Director, Investigations for the Outreach, Engagement, and Training department. In this position you plan, implement, and oversee investigations and research that support the organizations strategic plan, ensures legal compliance, and packages the final product.

You will be responsible for:

--- Working with program staff and other departments to align research and investigations with the strategic plan and align work to advance policy reform or program goals. Obtaining permission to pursue investigations;

--- Planning, implementing, and overseeing investigations and research for the Investigations section. Guiding the work of investigators, managing undercover risk, and reviewing daily log notes. Overseeing purchase, maintenance, of undercover investigative equipment;

--- Managing staff and recruitment and hiring of new investigators. Managing team ensuring that staff achieve their goals, including providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development;

--- Consulting with the Office of General Counsel to ensure investigations are undertaken in full compliance with laws and regulations;

--- Reviewing recordings and documentation from research and investigations and collaborating with Communications and other departments to edit and prepare materials;

--- Creating or reviewing investigation materials including media content, press releases, video, documentation, reports, and complaints as needed;

--- Keeping abreast of trends relevant to organization's priorities and activities and new technologies;

--- Managing communications and regulatory procedures with relevant federal agencies including the USDA, collaborating with the Animal Protection Litigation department as needed;

--- Managing the budget including budget submissions and monthly review.

Qualifications and Requirements:

--- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required;

--- A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in investigations or another related field required;

--- Management experience in a related field, which has included management and leadership responsibilities for staff, strategy development and execution, and fiscal and budget accountabilities, preferably in the animal welfare arena required;

--- Willing and able to travel and work a flexible schedule;

--- Knowledge of federal and state animal law strongly preferred;

--- Knowledge of video and photographic equipment and video editing techniques strongly preferred;

--- Leadership ability in work setting. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;

--- Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;

--- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;

--- Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;

--- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

--- High level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others;

--- Knowledge of business operations, including effective budget development and management processes;

--- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;

--- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.

This position is based in the Washington DC Metro Area - Remote eligible.
