Associate EditorStarting salary: $75KOpen Campus is hiring a
bilingual associate editor to strengthen our growing network of
local reporters and expand our capacity to serve Spanish-speaking
communities across the United States.Higher ed is a local story and
it shapes the future of every community. To cover it that way, Open
Campus adds dedicated reporters to newsrooms across the country who
examine how colleges are shaping local economies, career pathways,
and the livelihoods of the people who live nearby.The includes 17
partner newsrooms. Every week our editors seed and support in-depth
stories and expert beat coverage in those local markets,
brainstorming story ideas, doing big-picture edits, coaching
reporters, analyzing data, and providing national sources and
context.In this job, you'll support that work and help us develop
new resources, tools, and products to better serve local audiences,
with a special focus on improving our ability to serve
Spanish-speaking communities.Your main responsibilities will
include:
- Serving as the point person for several of our newsroom
partners, including those that primarily serve Spanish-speaking
populations
- Connecting Open Campus and its 17 partner newsrooms more
directly to Spanish-speaking audiences, particularly in states like
Texas and California
- Providing editorial guidance to local higher ed reporters,
including:- Story coaching and editing- Idea brainstorming- Data
analysis support- Expert sourcing
- Ensuring high-quality Spanish translations of community
outreach materials and reporter toolsWe're based in Washington,
D.C., but you may work from anywhere in the United States.Here's
what we're looking for in an associate editor:
- A bilingual journalist (Spanish and English) with strong
editing and translation skills
- A collaborator whose strengths lie in working with people,
guiding, supporting, and inspiring them
- A journalist with experience untangling complex policies and
communicating clearly about why they matter
- An organizer and problem solver skilled at creating structures
and resources that improve journalistic work
- Someone excited about our mission of expanding local news
coverage and serving diverse communitiesWe are particularly
interested in applicants who have experience in:
- Working with Spanish-speaking communities
- Developing audience-engagement strategies
- Higher education reporting or editingWe know there are
