Resume submissions without a cover letter included will be automatically disqualified from consideration.*Compensation for this position is in the $65k range to $74K range depending on qualifications and experience.Summary: The Senior Accountant position is responsible for serving as a team leader in the Accounting and Finance department and ensuring the department creates accurate and timely financial records for the organization, by performing the following duties:Accounting / General LedgerReporting & AnalysisProvides oversight to Jr. Staff in some of 4 functional areas as related to the General Ledger:PayrollAccounts PayableFixed AssetsAccount reconciliations and GL entriesCompliance includingGAAPCost accounting - direct & allocating indirect costsGovernment contracting - FAR, FTRSupport annual Audit and Tax filingsFollow & update SOPs as processes changeTrain employees on how to submit reports to AccountingThe Senior Accountant supports Accounting & Finance practices and objectives that will provide accurate & timely financial reporting, that emphasizes customer service, empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, and goal attainment.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:Accounting / General Ledger (GL) *Maintains GLTimely recording of General Ledger (GL) entries into the accounting system (Sage Intacct) and ensuring all transactions meet current standards and GAAP. *Creating/updating spreadsheets to load into the accounting system and maintaining a log of all GL entries. This is to properly document and track all monetary transactions/events. This is done throughout each month for recurring and special (one-time) entries. *Prepares GL entries and reviews GL entries completed by other staff before posting them to Sage Intacct. *Examples includeAuxiliary insurance programs (AIP) to post transactions from the Billing system to the GL.Records AR, Deferred Revenue for AIP programsInvestment & banking activityStandard monthly entries (allocate prepaid costs)Credit card activityPayrollFixed Assets activityBanking / Cash:Bank Account reconciliations (Truist)- Finds and explains any difference between statement balance, and the balance in our accounting system monthly for: *Maintains and balances subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies. *Balance Sheet Account Reconciliations - Finds and explains any difference between statement balance, and the balance in our accounting system periodically as assigned.Other GL accounts as needed.Annually updates allocation rates in Sage Intacct for all expense accounts and staff that are not 100% healthy. This setup is the framework to allocate costs to all programs on a monthly basis. *Creates new accounts in Sage Intacct and makes sure they are properly mapped to financial statements. *2. Reporting & AnalysisSummarizes financial status by collecting information and preparing month-end close. Reviews Trial Balance, Income statement, and Balance sheets for completeness. *Develops new reports and dashboard as needed3. Audits and Tax filings/complianceAudit preparation and requestsMaintains prepared by client schedules (PBC) and uploads to shared website Suralink.Fields requests from auditors and explains procedures used in different duties (such as journal entries, year-end accruals, and account reconciliations), for both interim and year-end fieldwork. *Tax PreparationAnnual tax preparation of schedules required for Forms 990 including Compensation schedule. *Prepares annual AFSPA DC Personal property tax report (July), MD (April). *Prepares annual AFSPA PCORI tax report for FEHB (July) *Prepares annual AFSPA PCORI tax report for HRA (July) *Reviews monthly Sales & Uses tax preparationWorker's Compensation audit (Oct/ Nov)Oversees annual 1099 and W-2 reporting4. OtherCreate/maintain SOPs for responsibilities listed above *Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controlsTraining and mentoring junior staffProtects the organization's value by keeping information confidentialUpdates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading relevant professional publicationsDevelops systems for the maintenance of financial records, making use of current technologiesOther duties as assigned

Additional experience preferred if job applicant is not a CPA. Broad knowledge and experience in Accounting including General ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, revenue recognition, account reconciliations, and credit card expense processing, and working knowledge of FAR and FTR preferred.Work Location:The following are work locations that AFSPA utilizes: New Carrollton, Maryland Satellite Office; Washington, DC Headquarters; and remote.
